Ali, our resident Drama Therapist, believes deeply in the healing power of play. For children and teens, play is not just something they do for fun—it is one of the most natural and effective ways they communicate, process emotions, and make sense of their inner world. When words feel hard to find, play becomes a language of its own.
In her work, Ali uses tools such as masks, puppets, storytelling, movement, and imaginative role-play to create a safe and welcoming space where young people can explore who they are and how they relate to the world around them. These playful methods allow children to step slightly outside of themselves, giving them the freedom to express thoughts and feelings that might otherwise feel too vulnerable or overwhelming to share directly. Through pretend and imagination, they can try on new roles, experiment with different responses, and discover new ways of being.
This kind of creative exploration helps build flexibility, confidence, and emotional resilience. It supports children in gently challenging unhelpful habits and limiting beliefs about themselves, often without the pressure of “getting it right.” Instead, the focus is on curiosity, spontaneity, and choice—important foundations for healthy emotional development.
Just as importantly, drama therapy reminds children that healing does not have to feel heavy or intimidating. Sessions are often filled with laughter, creativity, and moments of genuine connection. In this space, children are not defined by their struggles; they are free to play, imagine, and grow. And yes—along the way, it’s also a whole lot of fun.
