Helping a Child Find Safety in the Chaos

Updated: 7 days ago
To protect the privacy of the individuals and families we support, names and identifying details have been changed to preserve their confidentiality.
There’s an eight-year-old girl who comes to our youth department because her 14-year-old brother is in lockdown. He has been involved in violent behaviour, and there has also been criminal activity.
At just eight years old, she doesn’t fully understand what is happening with her brother or why her family is going through this. She has grown up surrounded by so much chaos at home, and now she is trying to make sense of a world that can feel confusing and overwhelming.
For a child so young, these are incredibly difficult circumstances to navigate.
We are helping her work through these challenges, but perhaps most importantly, we are giving her something every child deserves: a safe space where she can simply be a child.
A place where she can be heard. A place where she can feel seen. A place where she can talk about what she is experiencing without fear or judgment—and where she can be reminded that none of what is happening is her fault.
What is incredible to see, is how open she is and how deeply she needs someone to listen. She carries so much for someone so young.
Being there for her means more than providing support. It means creating a space where she can begin to process what is happening around her, express her feelings, and experience moments of safety and stability.
Sometimes, we may not be able to change everything happening in a child’s life. But we can make sure they don’t have to face it alone.
And sometimes, having one safe place where a child knows they are seen, heard, and cared for, can make a meaningful difference—one that can stay with them long after they leave our doors.
